Buying a wicker moses basket
Is it worth buying a moses basket?
A moses basket will only last the average baby 4 to 6 months before they outgrow it, so many parents wonder if they really are a worthwhile investment. While some parents get along fine without one, the truth is that owning one can really make your life as a parent much easier, and they are good for the baby too.
The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths recommends that a newborn sleeps in their parent's bedroom for at least the first 6 months. If your bedroom is small, it is not always possible to fit a cot in easily and a wicker moses basket is the perfect solution. Being very light and portable, it means you are also able to keep your baby close and safe while they are napping during the day. They can double as a travel cot too, as they can be taken to other people's homes or on some holidays and you will always have the peace of mind that your baby will have somewhere comfortable and familiar to sleep.
Another advantage of purchasing a moses basket is that a lot of young babies sleep better in them than they would in a cot. This is because enclosed spaces feel much more secure to a little baby who has spent the first nine months of their existence in a very cramped womb. Once your baby is ready to make the transition to a cot you can make the process smoother by placing the moses basket inside the cot for the first few nights, to familiarise your baby with their new surroundings.
Why wicker?
A wicker moses basket has several advantages over other types. Wicker is very strong and long lasting. The basket will retain its shape well, and the durability makes them a great investment if you plan to have more children, would like to be able to pass it on to friends or relatives, or if you wish to sell it on once it is no longer needed. It is also the most aesthetically pleasing material for a moses basket to be made from - who wouldn't want their baby to have somewhere beautiful to sleep?
What worries some people is the cost, as high quality usually means paying a little more. But there are some great products available if you are on a tight budget but still want a wicker moses basket. We highly recommend the attractive John Lewis wicker moses basket, which is very well priced and also comes with a folding moses basket stand included.
What else do I need?
You will need extra sets of moses basket bedding. A quick search on the internet will give you suggestions for what is available. Don't limit your search to sheets - there are some great alternatives such as baby sleeping bags and swaddling blankets which may suit your needs a little better.
Although it is not essential, a moses basket stand can also be a worthwhile buy. It is better for your back, as you won't have to stoop, and makes it easier to put your baby down to sleep. You are much less likely to jerk your dozy baby back into startled wakefulness if you have less distance to lower them! If your baby enjoys being rocked to sleep, then a rocking moses basket stand will be of great assistance to you and there are some folding versions available if you lack storage space.
